The Design Guru
If I only had…More Space!
Are you yearning for the space to create the room of your heart’s desire! Fear not, you don’t need to be a wizard to create the illusion of more space. Just follow these simple tips:
| • |
Modest rooms grow visually by hanging a large, framed mirror on one of the walls. It not only visually enhances the room’s dimensions, but also opens up interesting views of the rest of the house and an echo for closely placed objects.
|
| • |
Maximize space by minimizing furniture. There is no better way to achieve an airy, open feeling than with “negative” space. Limit the number of furniture pieces, choose a flat-screen TV mounted on a wall, and keep the height of furnishing pieces low so as to not obscure views across the entire space. |
| • |
Choose a coffee table that has either multiple shelves below to hold the usual family clutter or one that has a lid that lifts to store books and magazines out of view. As a side benefit, dusting will be a breeze. |
| • |
To open up the entry area of your home, limit walls that divide the entry area from the living room. Shelving or a waist-high cabinet can provide the same purpose while doubling as a storage solution.
|
| • |
Low-back or backless stools used at a kitchen counter or bar area give the illusion of more space because of their low profile below eye level.
|
| • |
And finally, don’t forget that lighter wall and cabinet colors will enhance the feeling of openness in any room. |
Follow these tips and your room will feel long as the yellow brick road, wide as an endless poppy field, and tall as the shining spires of Emerald City.
