Your Personal Style... Scrap It!
Scrapbook it, that is. Gathering a collection of clippings you like is a great way to frame out a home decorating plan. Cast a broad net and be sure to consider a wide variety of magazines, books and photographs to find your inspiration. Be adventurous—you don’t have to like an entire ensemble. If you like just the window treatment, tear it out circle it with a highlighter and scrap it away. Pick and choose elements to your heart’s content and feel free to confidently criticize even the most professionally designed vignettes as “too cluttered” or “not enough color”. You are the only expert whose opinion matters in this scrapbook.
Be sure to gather examples of products that catch your eye. Feel free to take a whole house approach so if it’s a plumbing fixture, a bombe’ chest or an accent rug, clip it out. Selecting a few room settings will help you understand your personal preferences--do you like clean, organized table tops or do you find comfort in layers of memorabilia? What about the scale of furniture in relation to the space? And don’t forget color. Everyone has a different threshold and one person’s restful oasis is another’s crashing cymbal. Make a trip to the paint store and select some combinations of color chips that you find pleasing.
As you continue to build your scrapbook, common points of reference will emerge and you will have created a picture book of your unique personal style.
